Arch 140 Spring ‘20

An art gallery in Arches National Park that uses passive design strategies to sustainably heat, cool and light the exhibit space, providing shelter to weary hikers from the harsh elements.

The site is off a hiking trail in Arches National Park, one of the most rugged and beautiful landscapes on earth. Temperatures swing from scorching hot summer days to winter nights below freezing. The new art center will provide sanctuary for hikers even in the most extreme weather conditions while minimizing disturbance to the natural environment.

Clerestory windows, thick chamfered walls, and a south-facing courtyard wall allow natural light to pour into the gallery, minimizing energy use. Thick rammed earth walls with a heavily insulated envelope keep the indoor temperature constant and comfortable regardless of the outdoor conditions. During the frigid winter, solar gain is captured on the large south-facing glazing, and visitors are shielded from strong western winds by a protecting wall. During the summer months, all windows are fully shaded by large roof overhangs while an evaporative cooling tower regulates temperatures.
